TORY MPs have welcomed the appointment of Rishi Sunal as leader of the Conservative Party and new Prime Minister.
Conservative MP James Cartlidge told GB News: “I’m absolutely delighted with the result, I think the most important thing is that my constituents in South Suffolk, were worried about the economy.
“I’ve had a lot of correspondent from businesses, from people who have got mortgages who were nervous about what was happening and I think we’ve got Rishi coming into post with full support for the party from all wings. We’re going to have some stability back, we’ve got a real chance to move forward after these difficult weeks.
“I’m delighted for the country. I have huge faith that he will want to bring together talent from all wings of the party, he knows that we have to unite the party so that we can deliver for the country, that’s been his key message.
“You’ve seen colleagues from every single wing of the party, colleagues from seats all across England, in Scotland and Wales, wanting to support Rishi, and wanting for us to come together and get back to work delivering for the country.
“I’ve got huge faith that we have a Chancellor of Exchequer and a Prime Minister who understands the challenge before then we’ve got to make these difficult decisions.”
Echoing those remarks, Conservative MP James Daly said: “There is a mood of unity and of togetherness, and of shared purpose. I think things have changed since last week. People are relieved that leadership has been settled. People, whatever their views, want to come behind Rishi to unite behind his platform and deliver for the country. So the mood has definitely improved among my colleagues.
“There are clearly challenges, electoral challenges in respect to that, but we’ve got to make the decisions which are right for the country and right for constituents all across the country.
“No politician wants to reduce benefits. No politician, certainly that I’ve met on the Conservative benches, wants to see that triple lock changed.
“It’s very, very difficult, and there will be difficult decisions coming up.
“If we don’t deliver, if we don’t turn the economy around, we’re not going to have very many MPs left at the next election. So it’s all about delivery. It’s all about being focused on the interests of our constituents.
“We spent too much too much time over recent months playing political games, and it’s got to stop. We’ve got the right serious, competent, capable, credible people now in position who will deliver this for the country.
Tory MP Matt Vickers MP added: “We’ve seen him elected, appointed by our parliamentary party unanimously, we’ve got behind him. If you’d been in that room yesterday, when the 1922 met, you would see the warmth with which we welcomed this man, because we know he’s got the skills. When he’s got the intellect, we know he’s got the commitment to get on with the job and deliver it in what are very, very tough times.
“We’ve had some of the toughest and most trying of times in Government, all of the challenges that have come our way out elected in 2019, I didn’t see the Covid pandemic, I didn’t see the war in Ukraine, I didn’t see all of these things coming down.
“To be honest… it’s probably one of the most challenging situations that a Prime Minister could come to office and I think he’s the right guy for the job. And in fact, the parliamentary party behind me thinks he’s the man for the job. So let’s see what he’s got to offer.”
“But I think Rishi is the man for the job. He understands the setting. He understands the situation. He’s had the keys to that economy for some time before. And he rose to the challenge and he delivered for the most vulnerable people in society. And I think he’s the guy for the job now.
“I was the deputy chair of the party and chose not to go with that, not to take an appointment in the illustrious government. But what we saw yesterday was a unanimous party coming together with all wings of that party, some of the biggest beasts in our party, and in the end, Boris decided not to run. Penny’s got behind him. Everybody’s got behind him. They know that Rishi is the man for the job, and we’re going to get on with it.
“If anybody can get the economy back on track, it’s Rishi. I think the last thing this country wants now is a general election. We went through the summer with a leadership debate. Now it’s time to get on with the job. Get it done.
“There’s all sorts of challenges there, whether it’s the war in Ukraine, whether it’s the upheaval in our economy, we need to get on with the job, focus on it and deliver that for the people of this country.”
