Some of the City of London’s most famous buildings will light up this weekend to celebrate the Coronation.
Tower Bridge, London Bridge, and Guildhall – the City of London Corporation’s headquarters – will be specially lit in red, white, and blue to mark the crowning of Their Majesties King Charles III and the Queen Consort.
Meanwhile, the Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of the City of London, will also light up over Coronation weekend.
The lighting up will take place on Saturday evening – the day of the Coronation – and on Sunday to coincide with the BBC’s ‘Lighting Up The Nation’ Coronation concert.
Lord Mayor of the City of London Nicholas Lyons said:
“The Coronation is a day of national celebration and marks the beginning of a new era for the country and the Commonwealth.
“It’s only right that we should honour this momentous occasion by lighting up some of the UK’s best-known landmarks.”
City of London Corporation Policy Chairman Chris Hayward said:
“The first Coronation of a new monarch in 70 years will be a truly momentous event for our country.
“Bathing the City’s iconic landmarks in red, white, and blue is a highly visible way of celebrating the crowning of our new King and demonstrating the City’s long-standing support for, and loyalty to the Monarchy.”
Guildhall, the Mansion House, Tower Bridge, and the Central Criminal Court – popularly known as the Old Bailey – will also fly the Union Flag over Coronation weekend.
Tower Bridge, London Bridge, and three other Thames bridges are owned by Bridge House Estates, the 900-year old charitable trust of which the City Corporation is sole trustee.
