Liam MacDevitt, TV presenter and former footballer, visited Brigantia Explorers in Ealing to show his support for the Scouts. He said “I don’t think any of my years as a child, which led me to achieve those dreams and those goals, would have been possible without volunteers. They really are like the heartbeat of a local community.”
Scouts offer over 200 different activities. From fun-filled thrills and wild adventure, to creative activities and historic learning, there’s something to suit everyone. At Explorers you’ll get the chance to dream big, find your place in the world and make memories to last a lifetime. Adult volunteer Diogene De Souza said “It’s a great honour and a privilege for Brigantia to be part of Liam’s introduction to Scouts. I know the Explorers are having a really great time running around and playing Frisbee with him.”
“One of the main skills that young people are getting from outdoor adventures, is resilience,” said Liam. 92% of young people say they learn skills for life with Scouts. Liam thinks that “Putting young people in a position where they’re exposed to problems and difficulties is something that can help them later in life. Being adaptable from the lessons you learn outdoors and being able to overcome challenges is so important for young people.”
Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are. Young leader and Explorer Ben said, “My one piece of advice for Liam would be to follow the Scout motto, and always be prepared, because you really don’t know what to expect.” 85% of young people in Scouts take part in activities they have never tried before.
Immy, another young leader and Explorer, said “It’s a good community to be in, because everyone’s really nice and welcoming. You learn skills that you won’t learn anywhere else.” Ealing and Hanwell Scouts are also looking for additional volunteers to support the Unit. This could be working directly with the teenagers, or as a Trustee, or doing some work in the background which might be IT, administration or fund raising to name but a few.
