An underweight cat with a severe eye infection who was rescued from a home with around 40 cats has undergone an amazing transformation and is now hoping to find her forever home.
Seven-year-old tortoiseshell cat Toots was rescued from a multi-animal home where she was living in very poor conditions in Tooting. Sadly, she was underweight, covered in fleas and was experiencing bleeding and infected eyes.
She was rescued by an RSPCA officer and brought into the care of the RSPCA Canterbury & District Branch in Kent who worked with Vets for Pets in Canterbury for over six months to bring Toots back to full health.
Natalie Archer, branch manager, said: “She underwent eye surgery for entropion and was put on a special diet to increase her weight gain back to a healthy weight. Sadly though, she was completely shut down and would hiss at her carers or hide away. She was understandably very wary of people after her heartbreaking start in life and started over grooming leaving her with sore, hairless spots on her body. With some gentle care, love and medical treatment, she started to be more interested in the team and particularly in treats. We decided she just needed some calm, one on one time with a person she could trust so Toots was put into foster care where she has absolutely blossomed.”
Toots is a friendly, affectionate and intelligent cat who is looking for an adult-only home. She may be able to live with another cat but would prefer not to live with a dog. She will also want an owner who will be around for a good part of the day as she enjoys company and she would like to be able to have access to the outdoors so that she can explore.
Toots’s fosterer, Natasha Ward, added: “Toots is a friendly, affectionate cat with mountains of energy. She loves fusses and attention, but she knows her own mind and she’s not really a lap cat. You might persuade her to sit on a nice comfy cushion on your knees, but she much prefers to curl up next to you and enjoy your company, with regular glances at you and little meeps whenever she wants her ears scratched!
“She is very intelligent, so is easily bored and will need plenty of mental stimulation. If she isn’t given enough appropriate outlets for her energy she’ll be sure to show off her mischievous side! But if you throw her ball for her a few times she will be your best friend. When Toots plays she loses all dignity and will throw herself into the air after a ball looking like a little meerkat and she’ll skid around corners chasing a piece of string.
“Toots really has the sweetest personality and has had such a tough time while we were figuring out her medical issues. Now that she is feeling better she will be a lovely companion for the right person. All she needs now is her perfect forever home!”
