Mátyás Tóth, a University of West London graduate in Music Technology and Radio Broadcasting (2018), is part of the Oscar and BAFTA-winning team for Best Sound on Dune: Part Two.

During the three years he studied Music Technology and Radio Broadcasting at UWL, Mátyás had the opportunity to explore the diverse possibilities of sound through exciting and varied subjects.

“My university years helped me clarify exactly which direction I wanted to take in working with sound and motivated me in determining my path. It was also exciting to gain insight into my professors’ professional work.” Mátyás explained.

Among the subjects Mátyás studied during his time at university, there were two courses taught by Sam Sutton, currently Senior Lecturer in Music Technology at London College of Music (LCM), that introduced the relationship between film and sound. This made him consider pursuing sound production for films.

Sam Sutton said, “We could not be prouder of Mátyás, for his incredible achievement in winning a shiny Oscar and BAFTA for Dune: Part Two. From his time with us, it was clear he had both the talent and dedication to go far, and to see him thriving at this level is truly special. His success is a testament to his hard work and passion for audio post-production, and it’s moments like these that make what we do so rewarding. We love seeing our graduates make their mark in the industry, and we’ll be cheering him on for all that comes next.”

Justin Paterson, Professor of Music Production, added, “Mátyás now joins our elite Music Technology alumni club of other Oscar, BAFTA, GRAMMY, EMMY, and ARIA winners! It just goes to show that we are able to give students genuine career propulsion, and it is a testament to how industry-focused our courses are. We wish Mátyás continued success in his wonderful career – I think he will find himself very much in demand after this!”

On his experience working on Dune: Part Two, Mátyás said, “Being part of the Oscar and BAFTA-winning sound team on Dune: Part Two is an incredible honor, and I feel so grateful to have contributed to this amazing project. Huge credit to Gareth John, our brilliant production sound mixer, as well as my incredibly talented teammates Tom Harrison and Freya Clarke. The collaboration, creativity and dedication within the team made this experience truly special, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we achieved together. Looking back, my three years at UWL played a huge role in shaping my path in the industry. The hands-on projects, guidance from incredible lecturers, and opportunities to collaborate with like-minded creatives gave me the confidence to pursue this career. Those years were foundational in helping me find my voice in the world of sound, and it’s surreal to see how that journey has led me here. Being part of this industry and working on Dune: Part Two has been a dream come true. I’m beyond excited for what’s ahead and so grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey!”

Sue Bowerman, Senior Lecturer in Radio Production, taught Mátyás during his time at UWL, “Mátyás was one of those very unique students who lit up the classroom. Always going above and beyond and delivering everything with passion and curiosity. He was a key team player within one of the most innovative student projects I’ve encountered, probably the most adventurous live music event and outside broadcast to date. He is talented. Kind. Always taking on the opinions and wishes of others. I am not surprised that he has found himself in a team of this calibre. His passion for sound was evident from the very first day I taught him. I’m incredibly proud to say that I walked alongside him in his studies at UWL.”
