The University of West London (UWL) celebrated winning two awards and being highly commended in another at the 2025 West London Business Awards at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Friday 31 January. The Awards spotlight the exceptional initiatives and achievements of businesses and organisations based in the west of the capital. More than four hundred business leaders, entrepreneurs and VIPs attended them.

UWL’s first win was for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Business of the Year.

The judges said, “University of West London has a clear strategic approach with focus on key areas of development. They have a comprehensive application with clear and demonstrable strategy targets, results, and impact.”

Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development Kevin West commented, “This award recognises our commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse culture across the University. We have committed to a number of initiatives to promote awareness of equality issues which has resulted in tangible improvements for our student and staff experience. We look forward to continuing this work.”

Chartered Management Degree Apprentice, who works for West London NHS, Chatwantee ‘Kavita’ Ramlugun was Joint Winner of Apprentice of the Year.

“The apprenticeship has helped me greatly in my career and in my personal growth,” she said. “I am grateful to all those who have supported me through my journey.”

The judges said, “Kavita, a mature student and mother, advanced through multiple NHS roles balancing these demands with a management apprenticeship. Overcoming challenges as a non-native English speaker and during COVID-19, she remained focused on patient care, demonstrating resilience and dedication throughout her learning journey.”

“I was delighted to see Kavita win Apprentice of the Year,” says Director of Apprenticeships at UWL Janet Rowson. “There was a lot of competition, but her story really stood out showing the impact that an apprenticeship can have on someone’s professional and personal development. Kavita was able to achieve a Business Studies degree while continuing her important work for the NHS.”

UWL’s Team Algi, made up of Hospitality Management students, was Highly Commended as Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Algi is a patent-pending living wall solution that harnesses the power of algae to revolutionize energy efficiency and air quality.

The judges said, “While still in the start-up phase Algi is highly promising, and we look forward to seeing it grow in the years ahead given their long-term vision to have Algi installed in buildings worldwide, creating greener, cleaner cities.”
