The University of West London (UWL) has signed a new Civic Agreement with Hounslow Council, reinforcing a shared commitment to supporting local communities, strengthening the skills pipeline and driving innovation across the borough. The agreement was signed at an event held at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, attended by representatives from the public sector, education and local industry.
The new civic agreement formalises an expanding partnership between the University and the Council, bringing together education, research and local leadership to help create new opportunities for residents and businesses. It reflects a shared ambition to ensure that economic growth in Hounslow is matched by improved access to education, employment and training.
A central focus of the partnership is the creation of a Golden Mile London Skills and Innovation Hub, which UWL and Hounslow Council are developing in collaboration with Hadley Property Group. Situated on the Golden Mile, the hub will support the growth of the area’s emerging Creative-Tech Innovation District by helping entrepreneurs, start-ups and established companies develop new ideas and technologies. By linking local businesses with UWL’s academic expertise and student talent, the hub will contribute to a growing innovation ecosystem in West London and support the development of future industries in the borough.
The Civic Agreement also strengthens efforts to widen participation in higher education across the borough. UWL and Hounslow Council are already working together in Feltham to increase access to university study in an area where participation rates have historically been lower than the borough average. Through new short courses, community-based learning initiatives and stronger links with schools and colleges, the partnership aims to create clearer routes into higher education, skills development and employment for local residents.
Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, Leader of Hounslow Council, said:
“Hounslow has a strong and growing local economy, with thousands of businesses ranging from global companies to small local firms. As the borough grows, the University and the Council want to make sure residents can benefit from new opportunities and careers.
“This agreement will help ensure Hounslow residents can benefit from the jobs and opportunities being created in the borough.
“The University of West London is an important part of our community. By working more closely together, we can improve skills, support local businesses and create more opportunities for local people.”
Professor Peter John CBE, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of West London, said:
“As a university rooted in West London, we are proud to play an active role in supporting the communities and businesses around us. This Civic Agreement strengthens our partnership with Hounslow Council and builds on the work we are undertaking to connect education, skills and innovation with the needs of the borough.
“Through initiatives such as the Golden Mile London Skills and Innovation Hub, we will bring together our students, researchers and industry partners to help develop new ideas, support local businesses and create pathways into high-quality careers for residents.”
