Alternative Arts present the annual Women’s History Month programme in collaboration with Tower Hamlets council and venues across East London, 1-31 March 2025. The programme is bigger than ever before with major organisations and galleries taking part including Whitechapel gallery, Hackney Empire, the Barbican Centre, and Shoreditch Town Hall, alongside community organisations and women’s groups who celebrate with female-led theatre, workshops, music, exhibitions, talks and more.
With events taking place across the month there are multiple ways to join in and to witness East London’s thriving arts scene and community spirit. Pick up a brochure from one of the participating venues or download a programme from the Alternative Arts website. See below for an overview:

Mothers, Daughters & Sons Workshop with A Team Arts & Education at the Brady Arts Centre, Exiled Writers Ink present Refugee & Migrant Workers Speak Out at Bethnal Green Library, Talk & Discussion with Eithne Nightingale & Margaret Andrews on Girl Migrants in East London at Hackney Archives, Dalston CLR James Library, the Hackney HOWLers will be collecting memories of the Women’s Liberation Movement at the Tower Theatre, Dr Isabela Rosner will be giving a talk on Samplers & Schoolgirls: Hackney’s Female Academies in the 17th Century at the Hackney Museum.
Magic Me will be screening their film Her Story , Our Inspiration online, Otij-jo Collective will be running workshops at the Rich Mix, Republic of London and Poplar Union, The Rio Feminist Film Group are screening My Name is Andrea at the Rio Cinema. Join in on Women, Art & Mental Health workshops produced by Mental Creations and Films of Resistance – a series of screenings & talks presented by Four Corners, at St Margaret’s House. Take part in the Bollywood Dance workshop at Shoreditch Town Hall, or the Swadhinata Mela at Queen Mary University. Breda Corish explores 500 years of Irish Women in Tower Hamlets at the Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives, and Women’s Voices Now present their annual online Film Festival.
