Since its launch in Southwark in 2021, Veolia’s Sustainability Fund has successfully supported 25 projects with over £16,415.5 in funding. In 2024, 10 community initiatives received £6,000 in funding to make a positive and sustainable impact on their local environment.

Not-for-profit organisations, community groups, and individuals were invited to apply to the Sustainability Fund for a chance to receive up to £1,000 in funding for projects that enhance biodiversity, promote sustainable waste behaviours, protect or preserve resources, or use recycled, reused, or reclaimed materials.

10 projects were funded and are making a significant impact in Southwark, including:

St Saviours Gardens
were able to add greenhouses, tools and materials to continue to expand their local community garden that is connecting the local residents to green spaces in an urban residential area.
I Can Read
utilised their grant to expand their play and literacy materials around the topic of conservation as well as hiring public spaces to support learners to care for the planet.
Surrey Docks Farm
updated their signage promoting sustainability practices on site as well as increasing their recycling and waste infrastructure around the charitable farm and cafe.

David Fitzgerald, Divisional Head of Municipal Operations, Veolia UK said : “Since the launch of the Sustainability Fund, we have supported incredible projects across Southwark in partnership with Southwark Council where we deliver essential recycling and waste collection services.

“In 2024, our funding focus was biodiversity, which is under threat due to climate change. Projects that bolster biodiversity at a grassroots level can make a real difference to preserving the ecosystems upon which we all depend.

“We look forward to announcing the next round of funding very soon, and hope to continue to empower communities to deliver ecological transformation through their inspiring and creative ideas.”

The Sustainability Fund in Southwark is part of a UK wide network which has delivered over £300,000 to communities in funding since 2021. Residents can find out more and get ready for the next funding season, which opens in June, at veolia.co.uk/sustainability-fund
