Veolia, the UK’s leading resource management company, has supported five projects in Westminster with £4,075 in 2024 to improve biodiversity in their local environments and communities.

Since its launch in Westminster in 2021, Veolia’s Sustainability Fund has successfully supported 17 projects with over £12,000 in funding. In 2024, five community initiatives received £4,075 in funding to make a positive and sustainable impact on their local environment.

Not-for-profit organisations, community groups, and individuals were invited to apply to the Sustainability Fund for a chance to receive up to £1,000 in funding for projects that enhance biodiversity, promote sustainable waste behaviours, protect or preserve resources, or use recycled, reused, or reclaimed materials.

Five projects were funded and are making a significant impact in Westminster, including:

Nta’s Upcycling Workshop:
Nta’s Upcycling Workshop is a free preloved swap and mending weekly event for local residents, offering clothes, books and toys to families on low incomes, reducing fast fashion and benefiting families in the local area.
St Marylebone CE School:
St Marylebone is transforming its recycling culture with new colour-coded bins across its teaching rooms. The programme will help pupils better separate waste and recycling, particularly important as students dine in classrooms. This initiative is part of the school’s wider sustainability drive, which includes new food waste recycling schemes and environmental projects.
Green Kids Club:
Green Kids Club is delivering environmental education to local children aged 7-11. The after-school programme transforms young Londoners into eco-activists through activities including gardening, conservation projects and local environmental campaigns.

Nta Glover, Founder of Nta’s Reuse Workshop, said: “The Veolia funds have supported me to continue to assist and serve my local community through weekly sessions and community events within Westminster. The community swap shop has helped residents across various wards including Westborne, Harrow Road, Queen’s Park, and Church Street. In particular, low income families, people living in temporary accommodation and those seeking asylum.”

Scott Edgell, Divisional Head of Municipal Operations at Veolia Westminster Veolia, said: “Since the launch of the Sustainability Fund, we have supported incredible projects across Westminster in partnership with Westminster Council where we deliver essential street cleansing as well as recycling and waste collection services.

“In 2024, our funding focus was biodiversity, which is under threat due to climate change. Projects that bolster biodiversity at a grassroots level can make a real difference to preserving the ecosystems upon which we all depend.

“We look forward to announcing the next round of funding very soon, and hope to continue to empower communities to deliver ecological transformation through their inspiring and creative ideas.”

The Sustainability Fund in Westminster is part of a UK wide network which has delivered over £300,000 to communities in funding since 2021. Residents can find out more and get ready for the next funding season, which opens in June, at veolia.co.uk/sustainability-fund
