Veolia Camden celebrates a significant milestone as employee Steve Downer retires after an impressive 47 year career at the company. Steve, the third generation of his family to work at the company, followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather when he joined the collections team as a loader in March 1978.
Today, this tradition continues through Steve’s sons, Craig and James Downer, who serve as night shift drivers in the borough. His grandson Tyler, who joined the team six months ago as a loader, represents the fifth generation of the Downer family at Veolia Camden.
Throughout his time at Veolia, Steve has been a cornerstone of the team, primarily serving the Holborn area by providing essential recycling and waste collection services. As a staple on the contract for so many years, Steve has been present for decades of innovation, from the electrification of Veolia’s fleet to the introduction of uniforms designed to keep the team safe. Growing from his initial position as a loader to becoming a skilled driver, Steve has demonstrated dedication to his role, which allowed him to maintain a great work-life balance with early morning shifts.
Steve’s official retirement date is July 24 2025, and a celebration is being held to honour his time at the company. Steve’s dedication to the borough of Camden continues through his family members who remain committed to serving the community through their hard work.
Ilana Shaw, Divisional Head of Municipal Operations at Veolia Camden, said: “Steve has been a valued and popular team member throughout his time with Veolia and we are grateful for all of his hard work and dedication during his career. Having five generations of the Downer family work with us demonstrates our commitment to putting our people first and creating an environment where careers flourish and family legacies can grow.”
Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden, said: “Steve’s commitment and dedication to Camden’s residents over nearly 50 years is truly amazing, as is his remarkable family legacy of service to the borough.
“I would like to wish him a very happy retirement whatever the next chapter of his life brings.”
