A first look around the newly opened mental health facility at Springfield University Hospital has been revealed in a virtual tour. To celebrate London’s Great Mental Health Day, Friday 27 January, South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust is inviting the local community to take a look around the Trinity building, the Trust’s brand new headquarters in Tooting.
The state-of-the-art Trinity building has been designed to provide high quality services that deliver modern mental healthcare, giving people the best chance to recover in the best environment. The building was completed in December 2022 and is part of a £150 million investment at Springfield.
The virtual tour guides you through the Trinity building’s main atriums and onto its four inpatient wards. The building is also home to a variety of outpatient mental health services providing support to people across the boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth.
The Trust’s Executive Director of Nursing and Quality, Sharon Spain, said: “We understand that arriving somewhere unfamiliar and/or away from home can be daunting. We’ve created a virtual tour to enable our service users, patients and carers to explore areas of our new Trinity building at a pace that suits them.
“We hope that being able to take a look around Trinity will begin to reduce some of the uncertainty and anxiety that can come with entering a mental health hospital and help our patients to feel more comfortable.”
As part of the innovative design, Trinity features world-class artworks created in partnership with arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms – the first time an art project of this scale has been undertaken in the NHS.
Over 2022, leading artists hosted more than 120 workshops with the Trust’s service users, patients, carers and staff to help shape specially commissioned artworks, which are designed to transform how hospital wards are experienced by patients and service users.
Sharon continued: “From spacious, bright new wards to award-winning garden courtyards and vibrant artworks throughout, Trinity has been designed to break stigma and provide healing spaces where patients receive high quality care, treatment and recovery and where our teams are proud to work.
“Our Trust mission is Making Life Better Together, and this new facility is key to delivering this as we work with our community to transform mental health services in south west London.”
This year the Trust will also open another mental health facility at Springfield Hospital, the new Shaftesbury building, with further new builds planned at sites in Richmond and Kingston for delivery in the coming years.
Both Trinity and Shaftesbury will sit at the heart of ‘Springfield Village’, a new community including hundreds of new homes, a public square, shops and a new 32-acre park.
