2) The history of Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a city that has a long and fascinating history. The city was founded in the 7th century as an outpost of the Byzantine Empire, but it wasn’t until the 12th century that it rose to its greatest heights. During this time, Dubrovnik was one of the most powerful city-states in the Mediterranean, with a unique culture and laws, and an impressive trading network that extended far beyond the Adriatic Sea. During the Middle Ages, the city flourished as a major port and became home to several aristocratic families. They built lavish palaces, churches, and monuments that still stand today. In 1358, the city declared itself an independent republic, adopting its own constitution and elected rulers. It also formed diplomatic relationships with other powers and made commercial treaties. Unfortunately, in the 17th century, Dubrovnik was sacked by a Venetian fleet, leading to its eventual decline. In 1815, the city was annexed by Austria-Hungary and eventually became part of Yugoslavia after World War II. It then declared independence in 1991, just before Yugoslavia dissolved into civil war. Today, it is a vibrant city and UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts millions of visitors each year. Here are three reasons why you won’t regret visiting Dubrovnik. First, the stunning architecture and landscape make for some incredible photos. From the imposing walls surrounding Old Town to the iconic orange roofs and marble streets, there is plenty to marvel at. Second, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. Go sailing around the Elaphite Islands, tour the nearby towns and villages, or explore breathtaking natural parks like Mljet National Park or Lokrum Island Nature Reserve.
