Griffin Primary School has been named the winner of the London Borough of Culture Schools Garden Competition , a borough-wide initiative inviting primary schools across Wandsworth to design inclusive, sustainable gardens that champion biodiversity and community connection.

Delivered in partnership with Enable and Wandsworth Council as part of Welcome to Wandsworth, London Borough of Culture 2025, the competition encourages schools to reimagine outdoor spaces as a true ‘living classroom’, inspiring science-based learning, clubs, and extracurricular activities, while connecting with other green spaces.
Judges were unanimously impressed by Griffin Green, Griffin Primary School’s thoughtful and well-rounded proposal. The garden demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and education, with creative use of recycled and upcycled materials and a clear plan for long-term impact.

The school will receive expert support and practical resources to bring its vision to life, with guidance provided throughout to ensure the project is sustainable to maintain for school staff and students. Enable looks forward to working with Griffin Primary to refine the layout within the existing school grounds and exploring additional design features to strengthen an already inspiring project.

An assembly, delivered by Enable, was held at Griffin Primary School in December, educating students on where food comes from and how it can be grown. The session was designed to spark interest ahead of the garden’s development, and ensure students are involved from the very beginning of the project.

“At Griffin Primary School, our community faces significant social and economic challenges, with 68% of pupils eligible for Free School Meals and almost all living in areas of income deprivation. Despite these barriers, our children and families demonstrate remarkable spirit, resilience and determination,”

“Winning the London Borough of Culture Schools Garden Competition is a tremendous opportunity for our school. The Griffin Green Garden will create an inclusive, sustainable space that supports wellbeing, nurtures biodiversity and brings learning to life across the curriculum. For many of our pupils, who have limited access to green space, this will provide hands-on experiences in science, food growing and environmental stewardship.”

“The garden will be a true ‘living classroom’ and a symbol of our community’s determination to grow, learn and thrive together.”
