Contemporary artist Sara Pope has unveiled ‘Red’, a new exhibition and mesmerizing series of multi-media and oil paintings, at London Dock’s WappArt.
Renowned for her evocative portrayals of the human lips, Pope draws upon her extensive background as a successful fashion designer and magazine art director and delves into the sensuality and seductive power of the colour red. Exploring the bold cultural eloquence and profound influence of this colour on human emotions and decisions, Pope’s work aims to push the boundaries of the colour often associated with love, passion, and drama.
Sara Pope’s creative process is as captivating as her final pieces. Beginning with a makeup brush and lipstick, she meticulously paints her models’ lips, capturing their unique expressions through a detailed photographic study. These photographs serve as the foundation for her paintings, where she applies several layers of thin, diluted oil paint, occasionally mixed with lipstick. The result is a glossy, tantalizing surface that irresistibly portrays the human mouth, illustrating red’s primal influence on our autonomy.
Pope’s works have garnered widespread acclaim, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Paris’ Next Street Gallery, London’s Saatchi Gallery, and the Royal Academy of Arts. Her distinction as a leading contemporary pop artist is further cemented by commissions from prominent figures, including the Princess of Liechtenstein, Benson Wilson of the English National Opera, and Huda Kattan, Founder of Huda Beauty.
