The festive season was officially welcomed across London’s West End last night as stunning Christmas light displays sparkled across Regent Street, St James’s, Piccadilly, St Martin’s Lane and Leicester Square.
On the year that Regent Street marks the 70th anniversary of its festive illuminations—having been the first street to install lights back in 1954—crowds were treated to the spectacle of seeing the magnificent ‘The Spirit of Christmas’ displays light up against a backdrop of live choir performances of festive hits.
The displays comprise over 30 ‘Spirits’ and are made of over 300,000 LED lights which operate on a timer to conserve energy. Across the Regent Street and St James’s destinations, those looking to get into the festive spirit can admire installations on Regent Street, Jermyn Street, Piccadilly, and at St James’s Market, with displays on Glasshouse Street, Swallow Street, Princes Arcade and the sparkling Quadrant Arcade returning for a second year.
This festive season visitors are invited to treat themselves and loved ones to the delights of Regent Street and St James’s, where extra special gifts at flagship stores, delicious dining in renowned restaurants, plus bars, hotels and a whole host of entertainment options across theatre and the arts can be found nestled under the magical festive lights.
Illuminations can also be found over in the bustling theatre district of St Martin’s Lane where current productions include the critically acclaimed adaptation of Dr Strangelove starring Steve Coogan at the Noel Coward Theatre, and the poignant drama Barcelona, featuring Lily Collins, at the Duke of York’s Theatre, as well as Why Am I So Single? at the Garrick Theatre.
