Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond has confirmed a number of victims are feared to be in a critical condition following the car crash at a primary school in the area this morning (THU).
Speaking to GB News Mr Hammond said: “It is distressing and very sad. But I’m grateful for how quickly the ambulance, the paramedics, the fire service and the police were able to respond. I understand there’s been a number of casualties. I understand a number of those may be critical.
“I’ve had the chance to speak to the local police commander and the chief executive of the council, and all support is being given as needed.
“Many years ago, my daughter went to the school, so I know the area well. It’s a very secluded part of Wimbledon, it’s right out on the common towards the Wimbledon Common golf club. It’s on a very tight road. And so normally it’s very difficult to build up any speed on the road because people are parked, you have to wait for people to pass you.
“I can’t can’t speculate on how it happened. But it was a Land Rover, and it clearly wouldn’t have had a lot of space. It’s extraordinary that it managed to break through the fencing and into the school.
“I understand that obviously everybody will have been taken off the site. It’s the last day of term so it’s a very, very sad end to this term.
It’s a well-respected local school. Most of the girls who go there will be from local families in and around Wimbledon, and all of whom will be friends. So, it’s a great sadness for the local community.”
