Works begin to improve Pettman Crescent Bridge underpass

The Pettman Crescent Bridge underpass in Plumstead is to be made cleaner, safer and more welcoming for all, as a result of improvement works by the Royal Borough of Greenwich starting next week.

These upgrades are part of a wider programme of long-term improvements across Plumstead. They are funded by the Greater London Authority’s Good Growth Fund, which the council successfully bid for in 2016 and which is aimed at driving investment and regeneration in the area.

A council spokesperson said: “We are improving Pettman Crescent Bridge underpass in response to resident feedback. Upgraded footpaths, streetlighting and play areas will be complemented by new plants, flowers and trees as well as public artwork, revitalising and elevating this area for the benefit of everyone living in, working in or visiting Plumstead.”

The planned works include:

public artwork and murals
street lighting improvements
footway resurfacing and tiling
soft play surfacing areas
accessibility improvements
walls and enclosures designed to discourage anti-social behaviour
adding plants, grass, flowers, and trees
strategically placed CCTV
A plan for improvements was drawn up in response to feedback from the public expressed during a consultation held by the council in late 2023. Council officers worked to address multiple concerns expressed by local people about cleanliness, maintenance, safety, and the need for diverse community needs to be accommodated.

Works begin on Monday 23 June and are expected to take four months to complete, during which it will be necessary to close the area underneath Pettman Bridge to pedestrians and cyclists. Alternative routes will be clearly signposted.
