One of the UK’s largest ever drone shows took place above the Thames overnight, as a world-first saw 500 drones interacting with the London Eye for a dazzling visual display.
For the first time ever – drones took flight between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge bringing the skies over the capital bursting to life, as the stunning formation assembled 394ft above the river, depicting some of the world’s most iconic TV shows, sports and movies including Harry Potter, Batman, Superman, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon and The White Lotus in drone form.
Stunning onlookers with a captivating aerial display, the show celebrated the launch of HBO Max, the global, premier streaming service in the UK and Ireland today. The eight minute display showcased the wealth of best-in-class TV shows, blockbuster movies and live sport, via TNT Sports in the UK, available on the platform.
The staggering display magically commenced with the wave of a drone wand, depicting Harry Potter’s famous glasses, iconic lightning bolt scar and the golden snitch onto the world-famous London Eye.
An enormous, fire-breathing Game of Thrones drone dragon, illuminated the night sky above London’s Embankment, whilst the iconic House of the Dragon Targaryen Sigil nestled itself perfectly within the London Eye wheel, bringing the River Thames waters sparkling to life beneath.
Strategically soaring above the Thames, the drones transformed the Eye into the blockbuster backdrop for the majestic Superman shield and Batman search light. A stunning lotus flower blossomed in the sky, representing hit TV series, The White Lotus, before the drones masterfully formed an image of the UEFA Champions League trophy, the world’s greatest football club competition with exclusive live matches on TNT Sports, alongside a player shooting towards the Eye, celebrating live sport on the HBO Max service.
The cinematic spectacle, which took programmers 286 hours to design, saw the drones take off and land from a floating platform on the London Eye Pier. The aerial show culminated with a world-first as the drones interacted with the London Eye wheel itself, with the world-famous landmark forming the ‘O’ in HBO Max.
Barry Smyth, GSVP, HBO Max Marketing said: “In celebration of the launch of HBO Max, we wanted to create something special for fans across the UK – a simple but striking way to celebrate our stories and characters in a country we love. By using the iconic London skyline as our canvas and bringing to life moments from our films, series and sports with a little help from the London Eye wheel, this show comprising 500 drones is a small gesture of gratitude to the audiences who have made these titles so meaningful over the years, and an invitation to experience them all together on HBO Max.”
