WWT London promises a summer of wonder with a new postcard adventure trail

Families looking for a fresh adventure that will deepen their connection with nature can enjoy a new postcard adventure trail launching for the school summer holidays at WWT London, along with many other summer activities happening at the wetland centre.

Giant postcards, designed by children’s illustrator Ella Beech, share personal messages from nine animals living in wetland habitats worldwide. Dotted across the wetland centre, those on the adventure trail at WWT London use a trail map to find the postcards and discover new wetlands and the animals that thrive within them.

Created to offer an unforgettable experience, the postcard trail will encompass all corners and habitats of the WWT centre, so not only will explorers read what’s happening in wetlands across the globe but see, up close and personal, the interesting species enjoying the summer months at WWT London.

This includes lapwings, common terns, pochards, sand martins, reed warblers, moths, dragonflies, crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, and all other amazing minibeasts. Late summer evenings at WWT London also provide an opportunity for visitors to join a Junior Bat Walk and get closer to a diverse array of bats that feed over the centre, including two of Britain’s rarest bats: the Leisler’s bat and Nathusius’ pipistrelle.

Families completing the trail will have a WWT London postcard, so they may share their amazing experience and what they’ve learnt about wildlife and nature with a loved one.

Alexia Hollinshead, General Manager at WWT London, said: “We love sharing the wonder of the wetlands with families and can’t wait to welcome them this summer for a truly memorable day out. The postcard trail offers a real opportunity for them to explore nature and learn more about wildlife, both here and around the world. It’s a completely unique experience families simply won’t find anywhere else.”

Families who want to get involved can pick up a trail map at the visitor centre. Participating in WWT London’s postcard trail is included with an admission ticket and is free for WWT members.

The trail will run from 25 July until the end of the school summer holidays (1 September) and is part of an ongoing programme of summer 2024 activities at WWT London, which also includes:

Interactive storytelling sessions with Olivia Armstrong every Monday, exploring and celebrating the lives and habitats of the amazing plants and animals that call wetlands home
Free creative family workshops every Wednesday – from making your own ink quill pen to writing poetry
Daily pond dipping and otter talks
Mud Kitchen – a free-play activity that provides a healthy dollop of mud, pots and pans, and all the utensils children need to cook up a muddy cuisine classic
Wild Walk – a maze of balance beams and robe bridges through the reedbed
An adventure playground and water features for children to bounce, slide, splash and swing into action
