A Year 1 pupil from Belvedere Infant School in Bexley has been congratulated by local MP Abena Oppong-Asare after winning her annual Christmas card competition.

Tanvi Mahadev Singh received a framed copy of her winning design during a visit from the MP, who also presented certificates of participation to other pupils who entered the competition.

The competition invited primary school pupils across Erith and Thamesmead to design the Christmas card sent out by the MP each year. This year’s theme, “Love Erith and Thamesmead: portraits of local landmarks”, encouraged children to create festive artwork inspired by places in the local area that make them happy.

Tanvi’s winning design is a colourful picture of Lesnes Abbey Woods Park, featuring a festive collection of pine trees. Pupils were also asked to include a short explanation of why they chose their design.

Tanvi said:

“I like to go to Lesnes Abbey Woods Park because it makes me happy. I can make new friends in the park and I play with them.”

Abena Oppong-Asare, MP for Erith and Thamesmead, said:

“This is the fifth year I’ve had the pleasure of running my annual Christmas card competition, and the talent and enthusiasm displayed by our wonderful pupils never ceases to amaze me. It was a joy to visit the school and personally thank Tanvi and all the pupils who took part. Tanvi’s bright and cheerful picture of Lesnes Abbey Woods Park beautifully captures a place that holds special meaning for so many in our community.”

Miss Louise Lynch, Executive Headteacher at Belvedere Infant and Junior Schools, said:

“We are very proud of Tanvi and all the pupils who entered the competition. It was wonderful to welcome our local MP into school to celebrate their work. It gave the children a chance to be creative and to think about the places in our community that are important to them. Knowing that Tanvi’s artwork will be shared so widely – including at Downing Street and a royal palace – is incredibly exciting.”

Tanvi’s artwork was chosen as Abena Oppong-Asare’s official Christmas card and has been sent to more than 1,000 people and groups locally, as well as fellow MPs, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House of Commons and His Majesty the King.

Belvedere Infant and Junior School are part of The Pioneer Academy.
