The legendary Trojan Horse has arrived in London’s iconic Trafalgar Square, heralding the worldwide cinematic release of Christopher Nolan’s new mythic action epic, The Odyssey, in UK cinemas this Friday.
A life-sized, detailed replica of the Trojan Horse used in the film, the installation towers 11 metres high and weighs four tonnes. It will reside in Trafalgar Square for today only.
Rising high from a sand base between Trafalgar Square’s historic bronze lions and fountains, and in the shadow of Nelson’s Column, the breathtaking rearing horse has been constructed during the past six weeks by a team of 45 designers, steelworkers, fabricators and engineers. It was erected in London’s historic site over an eight-hour period, the result of more than 300 labour hours,
Crafted in steel, fibreglass, polystyrene, sand and resin, it is designed to resemble the weathered wood that the Greeks in the film, led by Odysseus (Academy Award® winner Matt Damon) in the Trojan War, use to build the horse. In Homer’s foundational myth, the Greeks hide inside the hollow horse, deceiving the soldiers of Troy into hauling the mammoth statue into their city, unknowingly allowing the enemy behind their gates.
The breathtaking sculpture stands tall in the centre of Trafalgar Square alongside a captivating exhibition of film imagery, behind-the-scenes photographs and a corridor of flaming torches.
Displayed for a single day following its appearance at the World Premiere last Monday, the Trojan Horse will next be erected at Westfield London, where it will reside alongside the photography exhibition from Thursday 16th to Monday 20th July. The display will be free for the public to visit in Westfield Square, White City.
