Brixton Village Launches Donation Drive to Give Back to the Community

In light of the difficult times faced by so many this year, Brixton Village is pleased to announce the launch of Brixton Donation Drive – a fundraiser to give back to the local community, taking place from Monday 7th to Friday 18th December.

Partnering with Brixton Village-based charities Compliments of the House and Re:Sole, the drive will be open for donations every Wednesday through to Sunday from 3-8pm in Market Row’s Cardboard Unit. Visitors can also donate items outside of these hours, by following drop-off signs to the management office.

Joining forces to deliver this important fundraiser for the community, Compliments of the House is the surplus food distribution hub using local food businesses to provide meals to the homeless and those most vulnerable. Re:Sole is the latest South London charity to join the markets, with a mission to provide fresh trainers to the homeless and disadvantaged youth at risk of drug abuse and gang violence.

Encouraging the local community to give back and help those most in need, volunteers will be on hand over the course of the two weeks for visitors to drop off long-life food and drink items, trainers and shoes, and contactless cash donations via the tap-to-donate card reader.

Keen to involve the creative community and showcase some of the area’s wonderful creatives, Brixton Village is working with talented local artist Mona Wishkahi to deliver a large-scale illustration for the charity-led shop front. An art director, production designer, and Brixton-based artist, Mona is known for her neon tape artworks, born from her fascination with tapes and their unique colours, from her time working as a set assistant.

To help both charities on their missions to support the local community, Hondo Enterprises – the custodians of the markets – will match the cash donations offered. All proceeds will be split equally between Compliments of the House and Re:Sole.

Diana Nabagereka, General Manager of Brixton Village says: “In a not so normal countdown to Christmas, it was only right that we supported some of the great work that our two onsite charities deliver. During this pandemic, Compliments of the House and Resole have worked tirelessly to help the most vulnerable and in need, and so we are thrilled to be partnering with them for this fortnight of vital fundraising. Seeing a local creative offer their time to bring this to life with a large-scale installation is the perfect addition to this very local project.”

The Brixton Donation Drive will take place every Wednesday through to Sunday from 3-8pm between the 7-18th December, in Market Row’s Cardboard Unit (14E)
