Pupils at Downe Primary School will have the opportunity to develop their golfing skills after the school arranged to team up with Cherry Lodge Golf Club. The lessons, which introduce pupils to golf in a fun and meaningful way, focus on teaching fundamentals of the sport while helping to teach children skills and techniques which will benefit them on the course and in life.

The Downe Primary School children work with teachers from Cherry Lodge Golf Club on a weekly basis, with the programme paid for by sports premium funding. Downe Primary School, part of the Pioneer Academy Trust, arranged the golf lessons as part of its ‘Pioneer Passport’ promise to pupils.

The Pioneer Passport is a promise to all pupils to provide them with a wide range of cultural experiences, with seven activities before the end of Year 2, and 11 activities before the end of Year 6. One of these activities is to learn an ‘alternative sport’, and with a plethora of clubs nearby, golf was a popular choice among the Downe Primary School pupils.

Ellie, a Year 5 pupil at Downe Primary School, said:
“I am really enjoying the golf lessons as we are taught by professionals who really know what they are talking about.”

Poppy, a Year 5 pupil at Downe Primary School, said:
“It’s great that we get to do this sport as I wouldn’t have learnt this skill otherwise.”

Rebecca Dolan, Headteacher at Downe Primary School, said:
“We know how important it is to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for children and getting them interested in a range of sports is a really good way of starting that. With a range of golf clubs in our local area there has been real interest in learning more about the sport and developing their skills.

“Thank you to Cherry Lodge Golf Club for their support in providing these lessons. The children have been really excited in their lessons and have reacted so positively to them. Quite a few already attended local driving ranges and have their own clubs which they have been able to bring in, while our other pupils are loving learning about the sport from the beginning.”
