Camden parents turning to cargo bikes to beat traffic, cut pollution, and find joy on the school run

Local charity Green School Runs is helping Camden families swap stressful, traffic-heavy school runs for joyful, low-emission journeys thanks to a wave of new funding from Lime and LCC’s Share The Joy Community Fund.

The North side of the borough of Camden – covering Frognal, Belsize and Hampstead – has over 30 schools and around 8,000 pupils packed into just a few square miles. Many operate without catchment areas, driving high levels of car-based travel, congestion and air pollution.
In response to rising concerns about children’s safety and air quality, local parents founded Green School Runs eight years ago to help families make practical changes to make school runs safer and cleaner.
As part of this work, they launched the North West London Cargo Collective – a community for parents to share tips, ask questions and support each other in making the switch away from car journeys. The Collective also hosts regular local events where families can try out cargo bikes as a realistic alternative to driving.

Thanks to new funding from Lime and LCC’s Share The Joy Community Fund, their next Cakes & Cargo event will take place on Saturday 9 May, 10:00am–12:00pm on Hampstead Heath (Parliament Hill, near the Bandstand), offering families the chance to test ride cargo bikes, connect with other parents and enjoy free cake.
