Centrepoint young people create winning Platinum pudding as part of Jubilee celebrations

Earlier this week, leading youth homelessness charity Centrepoint brought together young people and staff at its Soho base to help prepare an afternoon tea for a Platinum Jubilee-themed social.

For the social, four young people leaned how to make cupcakes, scones, chocolate brownies and jubilee crown biscuits, as well as Fortnum & Mason’s winning platinum pudding – a Lemon Swiss roll and Amaretti Trifle.

Earlier this year, Fortnum & Mason challenged the UK to create a recipe fulfilling the criteria of being fit for a queen. The winning pudding was created by Jenna Melvin and will available for purchase in Fortnum & Mason’s Parlour (£7.50) and on the Ground Floor of our Piccadilly store (£8.95) until 6th June 2022. 50 per cent of the profits from the sale of the Platinum pudding will be donated to Centrepoint.

The team that took on this baking challenge included Rudainah and Rahaf, who have recently completed Centrepoint’s Get Set Go programme in hospitality and catering.

Commenting on the successful bakes and social Rudainah said: “It’s an absolute honour to be part of the jubilee baking. It was extremely great experience and doing the traditional cakes and biscuits was fun. I particularly enjoyed making and decorating the cupcakes.”

One of Centrepoint’s Skills and Employability Trainers, Sarah Chitty, added: “We wanted to think of a fun and engaging way of celebrating the Platinum Jubilee and a bake off-style event seemed like the perfect way to. All the baked goodiess were made by the young people from scratch. They did a wonderful job and I can personally say the Platinum trifle was yummy!”

Last year, the number of young people facing homelessness rose for a fifth consecutive year to nearly 122,000. London, as a region, still has one of the highest counts of youth homelessness – last year 15,200 young people in the capital were facing homelessness. Centrepoint warns that rising bills and prices and the recent Universal Credit cut could mean this number rises even further.
