Slow Horses is easily one of the best things on TV right now, and the spy thriller has been a huge hit for Apple TV+. Now in its sixth season, there’s the potential to continue it for as long as Mick Herron writes the book series.
Due to its status as a global sensation, there is now speculation about whether it could be expanded into a wider franchise. This is a common strategy in the modern entertainment market, where the leading series are often accompanied by related games and spinoffs.
Other Mick Herron Books Could Be Adapted
Up to now, each season of Slow Horses has adapted a different book in the Slough House series from Herron. The latest season is the first to deviate from this formula, however, as it is reportedly an adaptation of both Joe Country and Slough House. There are other books in the series ready to be transformed for television, while Herron also has plans to continue writing more instalments.
Herron has written several other books outside of his main series too, some of which are set in the same universe but with different characters. If Apple TV+ decides to commission some spinoffs, it would make sense to explore adapting these first. There’s also the potential for the company to commission more stories from Herron that could be turned into spinoff series.
Following in the Footsteps of Other Successful Series
In today’s entertainment market, when series become successful, they are often adapted into other media and spinoffs. One of the best examples of this is Game of Thrones, which has lived on long since the main series ended. On television, this has come in the form of two spinoffs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
There are also numerous games that have helped bring the franchise to a wider audience, such as the Game of Thrones: Kingsroad mobile game and the Game of Thrones Vegas casino online game. This can be found alongside other games that have branched out from television series, such as The Walking Dead: Cash Collect.
Aside from television spinoffs, it may make sense for Slow Horses to go in this direction as well. The subject matter of the series would lend itself well to games, allowing players to feel like they’ve stepped into the spy universe.
How Long Will the Main Series Go on for?
The Slow Horses showrunners have been proactive in keeping the hype up around the main series, with a quick turnaround between each season. Indeed, the next season has often already been filmed by the time the season that precedes it is released.
Apple TV+ clearly has no plans to cancel the series, and Sir Gary Oldman has already stated that he will happily continue as Jackson Lamb until they stop paying him to do so.
Anyone who watches Slow Horses won’t want it to end any time soon, and they would most likely welcome spinoffs. It would also make sense to expand the franchise in other media to grow the fanbase further.
