Thirteen cultural Elephant and Castle institutions are working together to host 20 events in just five days later this month to demonstrate the amount of talent and number of hidden gems based here, in Elephant and Castle.
‘Creative Elephant’, taking place from 19 to 23 June 2019, is a celebration of the galleries, dance studios, theatres, creative education institutions, clubs and more – all based in this diverse Southwark community.
Events range from family friendly street dance classes to exhibitions of paintings, a live radio broadcast, club nights, and even a Degree Show exhibition featuring work from hundreds of students across design and screen. Many of the events are completely free of charge.
Some of the events have been produced specifically for Creative Elephant. But most are events that were already taking place, aiming to highlight the volume and quality of events, exhibitions and workshops on offer every week at Elephant and Castle.
Gill Henderson, Cultural and Communities Partnerships Manager at London College of Communication, UAL, and one of the key organisers of Creative Elephant, said: “There’s so much going on in the Elephant, and much more than many people seem to be aware of.
“We want members of the public to explore the wide range of venues we have here, be the first to spot the rising stars across theatre, film, music, design, dance, and perhaps even surprise themselves.
“Creative Elephant aims to show people that Elephant and Castle is a destination, not just a route.”
Creative Elephant features institutions including Siobhan Davies Dance, Draper Hall, Corsica Studios, Southwark Playhouse, London College of Communication and more. A special website mapping out all of the activities on offer has been developed, as well as a printed map.
Creative Elephant is supported by Elephant and Castle Partnership and London Borough of Southwark
