LOCALLY owned and run opticians at the heart of Erith Riverside Shopping Centre has appointed a globetrotting member of the team.
Dr Ijeoma Usonwu originally from Lagos, Nigeria, brings a wealth of expertise to Specsavers Erith with over 15 years of clinical experience, having initially gained a Doctor of Optometry from Abia State University Uturu in 2006.
After qualifying as an optometrist in 2006, Dr Usonwu first came across Specsavers as she regularly ordered frames for the practice she worked at in Lagos. This gave her an early appreciation of the brand and its commitment to providing expert eye care.
So impressed was she with Specsavers, that in 2018 Dr Usonwu decided to relocate to the UK to progress her clinical career. It was in 2023 she enrolled on the OCSE course with the College of Optometrists, completing this in 2024. During this time Dr Usonwu joined the team at Specsavers East Grinstead where she gained experience as a pre-registration optometrist, before qualifying in 2024. Since then, she has continued to develop her clinical experience.
Discussing her role at Specsavers East Grinstead, Dr Usonwu says: ‘I was attracted to working at Specsavers because of its commitment to supporting professional development, investing in modern equipment and providing excellent customer care.
‘I’ve always wanted to work in an environment where my learning would be supported while providing the highest standard of care. I am very grateful to the team and store directors who supported me at Specsavers East Grinstead.’
After three successful years with the business, Dr Usonwu has now joined the team at Specsavers Erith. Commenting on her move Dr Usonwu adds: ‘I’m excited to begin this new chapter and l’m very much looking forward to caring for customers in the local community, working with the store partners and team.’
