If you’ve seen everything London has to offer around the festive season, turning your attention to the uppermost Northern Hemisphere will bring snow, Santa, red-nosed reindeer, and touches of traditional folktales right to your door.
So let’s make sure you get your flights and hotel tickets booked in plenty of time. Here are our top picks for the best Scandinavian Christmas markets to check out this year.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen is quite the famous hotspot for Christmas markets.
Tivoli Christmas Market is possibly the most popular of them all, right in the centre of the city at Tivoli Gardens.
This is a theme park in its own right, so there’s plenty to do for both kids and adults alike when you come here.
If you want to check out any other Christmas markets while you’re in Denmark, we also recommend H.C. Anderson’s Christmas Market, a more fairytale-inspired event found at Nytorv Square.
Tromso, Norway
Tromso is an incredibly beautiful place to go at any time of year, but the festive season is when it truly shines.
The entire central square is dressed up to fit the Christmas theme, and it’s even earned the nickname of ‘Christmas Town’ because of it.
Arrive early on in the day, drop your stuff off at a Radical Storage Tromso in the station, and then make your way to the market (or markets) of your choice.
You’ll have practically the entire city to choose from, as well as a chance to glimpse the Northern Lights later in the evening.
Take the cable car later on in the evening to get a closer glimpse of the sky – as well as a light pollution free snapshot of the gorgeous starscape.
Malmo, Sweden
Our final pick lands in Malmo, Sweden, where you’ll find a rather special (and quite traditional) Christmas market.
You’ll find the main attraction at Gustav Adolfs torg, both a park and central town square, slap bang in the middle of the city.
It’s free to enter, and has both an illumination trail all the way around the market and a nearby ice rink.
The market runs from Thursday to Sunday, which makes Malmo a perfect pick for a weekend city break this December.
Want to Get Away this Festive Season?
Then visiting a Christmas market up north is the perfect choice.
Scandis know exactly how to make Christmas feel extra special, and you’re much more likely to see snow on the ground then you are here in the UK.
And it’s not just the top picks we’ve recommended above. There’s many other markets to be found in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark alike.
We also want to give an honorary mention to the Rovaniemi Christmas Market in Finland as well, where you’ll find the year round home of Santa Claus and the elves in the Santa Claus Village.
