The Evolution of Black British Music – a series directed and executive-produced by acclaimed filmmakers Femi Oyeniran and Nicky ‘Slimting’ Walker – has won the prestigious Arts award at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards.
The series follows the extraordinary rise of British Black Music over the past thirty years – charting the genres that emerged out of the Black British rave scene, starting with Jungle and continuing with the music genres that followed. The nomination and subsequent award marked the first time a show from Black Entertainment Television (BET) has been considered.
The landmark award adds to directors Oyeniran and Walker’s creative partnership achievements, which began in 2013 with the feature film ‘It’s A Lot’, eventually becoming available on Netflix. The duo have since made several well-received films including ‘The Intent 2: The Come Up’ which won the Best Film award at the MVISA as well as three awards at the National Film Awards.

“The Evolution of Black British Music is one of the most important pieces of work we have ever done to date. For it to be recognised at the prestigious Royal Television Society awards in the Arts category is an honour.
For us to be the production company to bring BET UK its first nomination and win at the RTS awards is also incredible. We want to build on this with more work within television and the documentary space.”
