Ramadan Iftar in Finsbury Park brings communities together

On Tuesday 4 April 2022 (6.30pm) communities in Finsbury Park will once again come together to observe the breaking of the fast during Ramadan. With the support of Islamic Relief UK, Muslim Welfare House and Finsbury Park Mosque the celebratory event will host the local community, MPs and local representatives sharing a free meal and welcoming the holy month of Ramadan.

Muslims who are observing Ramadan will break their fast upon sunset, preceded by inspirational talks from key speakers including Leader of Islington Council Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Mayor of Islington Councillor Marian Spall, Catherine West MP and local councillors amongst others. The event is an opportunity for the communities from all faiths and none to join the local Muslim community, and break bread in the spirit of getting to know one another better.

The Street Iftar Party was first organised in June 2017, days after the terror attack in Finsbury Park Area on Muslim worshipers during the month of Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection and abstinence from food and drink. This called for the coalescence of communities to silence hatred and empower harmony and resilience, providing a platform to stand in solidarity with ‘hope’.

To date, Islamic Relief UK, Finsbury Park Mosque and The Muslim Welfare House have respectively served the local community through various projects including food distributions, fundraising activities and youth services with an aim to support individuals through the rising cost of living and the impacts of the pandemic.

Tufail Hussain, Director of Islamic Relief UK said

“Islamic Relief is delighted to be working with Muslim Welfare House and Finsbury Park mosque, once again this Ramadan. The community in Finsbury Park truly embody the spirit of unity and togetherness that Ramadan is all about. This iftar provides an opportunity to celebrate that spirit and build that feeling of harmony even further.”

Mohammed Kozbar, The Chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque said

“Every year during Ramadan we celebrate our diversity and our multi-cultural Islington community showed that this diversity is our strength and that we chose unity over division, the outpourings of support of people of all faiths and none encourage us to build even stronger bonds among us. With event like Street Iftar, we reconfirm our commitment to each other and to all those elsewhere who promote peace and community cohesion.”

Toufik Kacimi, Chief Executive Officer Muslim Welfare House said

“Muslim Welfare House is looking forward to working with Islamic Relief and Finsbury Park Mosque again on this important event. The togetherness of the community since our first event has been there for all to see. We are grateful to our friends in the community for showing their support year upon year for the street iftar and look forward to seeing thousands of you again on Tuesday 4th April.
