THE Government tried to ‘cover-up’ secret Army units that were sent to spy on those questioning Covid policies, a campaigner has claimed.

Silkie Carlo from Big Brother Watch was speaking in the wake of an investigation that alleged secretive Whitehall units have been monitoring government critics’ speeches online.

The targets allegedly include MPs, academics, journalists, human rights campaigners and the public.

Commenting, Ms Carlo told GB News: “This started right at the beginning of the pandemic when we heard about some counter-misinformation units that were started in Government and because this impacts freedom of speech, of course, we wanted to know what it was that they were doing.

“They were totally resistant to any kind of transparency, which of course makes one a bit suspicious about what they might be doing. And so after a really long and tireless investigation, we’ve found that far from working on disinformation, these units have been monitoring and recording critics of the Government.

“That includes some of the most expert voices that there are on the extreme policies that the government was implementing, whether it was lockdown modelling, or mass testing, vaccine passports they were highly interested in.

“We’ve seen people, from Members of Parliament to journalists, and world leading academics, recorded by the so-called misinformation units.

“These units, it has to be said, have a special relationship with big tech so they can flag information to the companies that they think should be suppressed or censored.”

In a discussion with Bev Turner, she said: “We’ve called the report Ministry of Truth in Orwellian style, because this really is an Orwellian script.

“I have pinched myself throughout this investigation at the things that we have found, let alone the British Army whistle-blower that spoke to us from the 77th brigade, a highly secretive unit, who revealed to us that they were spying on the population at large as well, with absolutely no safeguards to mean that Brits weren’t part of their investigation.

“These are people that claim to be fighting Russian troll farms and this kind of thing. And actually, they were spying on our own population.

“We need to see this information coming out, now we need to see change.”

Ms Carlo added: “Unless we unravel this now. It’s staying for good. The counter disinformation unit that we’ve exposed is now a permanent unit within the Government working on other topics.

“It needs to be shut down now, this counter disinformation unit needs to be suspended immediately and we need to open an investigation into exactly what happened.”
