Household recycling collections expand to cover Kingston’s flats above shops

From 28 March, flats above shops in Kingston will receive household recycling collections for the first time in a bid to provide the same recycling options to everyone in the borough.

Flats above shops are more difficult to service with recycling collections due to lack of space for dedicated facilities. Kingston Council and Veolia have worked together to roll out a new recycling service that will allow around 300 flats above shops in Kingston to receive recycling collections for the first time. As well as providing the same recycling options as other Kingston residents, this will help boost Kingston’s recycling rate of 47.6%.

Veolia will provide flats above shops with two new kinds of recycling bags. Clear bags will be provided for paper and card, with blue bags for plastic, glass, cans and cartons. This new service will help make the borough’s streets even cleaner as the new recycling bags will make it easier for the Council to identify and tackle fly-tipping.

Veolia and Kingston Council will engage closely with residents to ensure they know how to use the service, so that residents have everything they need to recycle correctly.

Scott Edgell, General Manager, Veolia SLWP, said: “Our teams are always looking for ways to improve the services which are offered to Kingston residents. By introducing recycling collections for flats above shops and a new dedicated recycling crew, these households now have the same easy recycling options as other residents and can do their bit to help boost the borough’s recycling rate. The new recycling bags will also make it easier for the Council’s enforcement team to react to genuine instances of fly-tipping.”

Councillor John Sweeney, Portfolio Holder for Business and Leisure said: “We’re really proud of the recycling rate in Kingston and continue to look for ways to ensure as many people as possible can dispose of their waste, while minimising their impact on the environment.”
