Christmas is never easy when you live a long way from loved ones, but if they are currently overseas, it’s even harder, especially if you don’t have the funds to catch a plane to visit them for the holidays. Whatever your circumstances, here are some tips to help make the separation easier.

Be Organised

Try not to leave everything until the last minute. Gifts won’t arrive if you post them on Christmas Eve, and cards must be sent well in advance to avoid being caught up in the Christmas rush.

Avoid sending generic gifts, even though things like gift cards can be sent as digital emails. While gifts like this are convenient, they don’t exactly offer much of a personal touch. Look for meaningful items. Put together a gift box of small items that are individually wrapped, like festive socks, sweets, scented candles, or anything the recipient will like.

Order personalised Christmas cards for all your loved ones, using photos of you and them. They’ll appreciate this much more than a standard card with a snowman on it. Do the same with other items, like calendars and mugs. If you have any especially funny images, use them. Everyone needs a good laugh while they shovel down turkey twizzlers on Christmas Day while wishing they were a thousand miles away with their loved ones.

Hang Out Together…Virtually

Just because you are many miles away from the people you care about, it doesn’t mean you can’t still hang out. Technology is a blessing in that regard.

There are lots of apps you can use to hang out together over the holidays, including Facetime, Skype, and WhatsApp. Pick an app that everyone is comfortable using and set a time when you can all log in. You can chat, open gifts together, and even play silly games. It’s a great way to be together without actually being together in person.

Make an Effort with New Friends

Treat this as a great opportunity to make new friends. Just because you can’t be with family and loved ones this year doesn’t mean you need to stay in and mope. Accept all social invitations and be open about the fact you can’t join family for the holidays.

If there is a bunch of you with no plans to see family over the holiday, organise a festive get-together at someone’s house. Make it a communal meal, so everyone brings one dish to the table and the work is shared. It will be fun for everyone.

Volunteer for a Charity

Instead of feeling down, do something for others by volunteering for a charity. It doesn’t have to be a soup kitchen unless you want to work on the big day. Most charities organise things for the holidays, such as present drops and fundraisers, and will be grateful for any help available.

Fear not if you are not looking forward to the holidays this year. Follow the tips above and you might actually enjoy it!
