Landsec, owner of one of the UK’s leading retail destination portfolios, has released its annual social and economic impact report revealing how Lewisham Shopping Centre is helping to drive local growth, contributing £233,804,892 to the local economy and supporting 2,739 jobs in 2025.*
As one of Lewisham’s leading retail and leisure destinations, Lewisham Shopping Centre plays an important role in people’s everyday lives that extends far beyond shopping. By supporting business growth, creating jobs and pathways into employment and providing a place where communities come together, the destination creates lasting value for local people, businesses and neighbourhoods.
In 2025, Lewisham Shopping Centre supported 2,739 jobs across Landsec, its retail partners and businesses operating at the destination. It also helped 181 people move closer to employment through initiatives such as employability partnerships, which provide valuable hands-on industry experience, and work placements.
The research also found that Lewisham Shopping Centre delivered £2,706,285.60 in social value in 2025 through investment in local communities and employment initiatives, including bursaries, community grants, volunteering and partnerships. These initiatives help create lasting value beyond economic contribution by supporting community wellbeing, strengthening local partnerships and fostering a sense of pride in the local community.
Alongside its economic and social contribution, Lewisham Shopping Centre continues to invest in a more sustainable future. In 2025, the destination reduced its energy intensity by -40%, reflecting Landsec’s commitment to creating places that deliver lasting value for local communities and the environment.
Lewisham Shopping Centre remains firmly rooted to its long-standing presence in the town since 1997. The shopping centre continues to improve its spaces, enhancing the overall customer experience and creating an environment where businesses can thrive. By strengthening and evolving its retail line-up, the centre is focused on supporting brands that will grow alongside the area and serve the community for many years to come.
The centre’s retail offering has recently expanded with the arrival of Waterstones, Tressly Studios and Sports Direct. Boots has also relocated its store within the centre and completed major upgrades to its health, beauty and wellness offering.
The centre is undergoing a phased redevelopment, creating a new green district, including a family park and wild meadow above a fully reimagined shopping centre. The project will introduce new public spaces, a music venue, additional shops, cafés, restaurants, and bars, creating thousands of jobs and contributing £160 million annually to the local economy. Lewisham Shopping Centre will remain open throughout the redevelopment, allowing visitors to continue shopping and enjoying the town centre as works progress.
Beyond retail, Lewisham Shopping Centre remains committed to making a positive impact through partnerships with organisations. For the past seven years, the centre has partnered with Circle Collective, supporting its work to help 16- to 30-year-olds across London who face barriers to employment gain the skills, confidence and opportunities needed to enter the world of work.
Paul Redden, Centre Director at Lewisham Shopping Centre said: “Retail destinations are part of the fabric of the communities they serve. They help local businesses grow, create employment opportunities and provide places where people can come together, connect and spend time.
“The findings published today demonstrate the important contribution Lewisham Shopping Centre continues to make to the borough. By investing in the destination, supporting employment, working with community partners and operating more sustainably, we’re helping businesses and communities thrive. In turn, that attracts further investment, supports long-term growth and creates lasting value for the local area.”
