Jed Thirkettle, a 24-year-old, from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, is set to embark on a remarkable 24-hour charity fitness challenge to raise funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy UK, on Saturday 4 November 2023.

Diagnosed with Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy aged eight, Jed is passionate about raising awareness of his condition and is determined to make a difference for others living with a muscle wasting or weakening condition.

Following Jed’s diagnosis medical experts predicted he would be in a wheelchair within a few years, reliant on a ventilator by the age of 14, and unlikely to live past his 20th birthday – but he has defied the experts. Undeterred by his condition, Jed rallied support from friends, family, and wider community to form ‘Team Jed’.

Over the years, this united effort has raised £200,000 to support Muscular Dystrophy UK, the leading charity for more than 110,000 children and adults in the UK living with one of over 60 muscle wasting and weakening conditions, like Jed. The money raised will help fund groundbreaking research into Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy.

To celebrate turning twenty-four this year Jed will start his monumental challenge with 24 consecutive hours of workouts, including a mixture of exercises from intense cardio to yoga, without rest, to commemorate his journey.

Jed’s 24-hour charity fitness challenge has received support from football coach and former professional player, Jack Wilshere and the charity’s president and TV presenter, Gabby Logan.

Debbie Hoods, Head of Philanthropy, Partnerships & Ambassador Engagement said: “Thanks to Jed for taking part in this unique challenge to help raise awareness and funds to support potentially life-changing research for the muscle wasting and weakening community. Jed and his family have been avid supporters and we’re grateful for their support over the years. Wishing Jed the best of luck and a very happy birthday – we can’t wait to cheer you on.”

The 24-hour event will take place from 10.00 on Saturday 4 November to 10.00 on Sunday 5 November at Buzz Gym, on Cannon Street, Central London. Supporters of Team Jed are welcome to join in, and Buzz Gym has arranged complimentary access to its facilities, including saunas, showers, and state of the art changing rooms.
