The Eat Game Awards will once again embark on a national search to find the champions of British game meat and to reward their success, innovation, and passion.

The Eat Game initiative, created by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), calls for the public to nominate their favourite game meat business or individual.

Nominations will be open from today (1st September 2022) until 20th November 2022.

The Awards were set up five years ago to reflect the ever-growing use of wild game and its benefits and feature eight different categories including best small and large game retailer, restaurant/pub, game butcher and influencer.

Last year’s awards were a resounding success with more than 250 different businesses and individuals nominated.

Annette Woolcock, Head of Wild Food at BASC, said: “We are determined to broaden the awareness of the health and environmental benefits that game meat brings and encourage its wider consumption across the UK.

“The Eat Game Awards are a tremendous way of recognising local businesses, new talent and those who have spent years, or even decades, spreading the word about wild game meat through their work.

“As we have seen previously, there are so many individuals and businesses doing such wonderful things to champion the use of British wild game and this is your chance to give them the recognition they deserve by nominating them in the Eat Game Awards 2023.”

Hanks’ Meat & Game in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, has won the best Game Butcher of the Year category at the Eat Game Awards twice.

Owner Tim Hanks said: “I was delighted and so very grateful to all who voted for me to win the title of Game Butcher of the Year for the second year running. It’s important that we hold competitions and events that promote responsibility from the moment the venison or game are harvested. I have really enjoyed demonstrating exactly this at national food shows and events and I am really looking forward to next year’s final – it’s so amazing to have so many like-minded people in one place. I would encourage people to nominate their game heroes and help them get the recognition they deserve.”

After nominations have closed, the top 10 nominees in each of the categories will go through to the voting stage. The public will be able to vote from 1st December 2022 until 10th January 2023.
