The dramatic Art Deco Gillette Factory was the venue for the ‘GM100 – Gillette Factory screenings’, on Saturday 14 June, to celebrate the London Festival of Architecture. The iconic venue is currently undergoing a transformation into a state-of-the-art film and TV production hub.
Work from BA (Hons) Photography and BA (Hons) Interior Architecture was shown on an amazing 150 ft by 30 ft screen, an ambitious undertaking organised by Hounslow Council and 180 Studios.
BA Photography was represented by three screenings. The first, ‘10 Years’, consisted of a selection of work about architecture and urban landscape by past and present students of the course, spanning the past 10 years. The second was ‘A4/M4 Heading West’, a body of work about Hounslow’s ‘Golden Mile’ by Course Leader Peter Bennett. The third was also a body of work by Peter called ‘An Ideal for Living,’ about future aspirational lifestyles and how they are portrayed through architecture.
BA Interior Architecture presented an original film designed specifically for the unique 150ft screen at the Gillette factory. “The Golden Mile; A Road Movie in Curved Time.” Especially created for the unique 150ft semi-circular screen it showed a journey into the past, present and future of the Golden Mile, a road trip in curved time.
BA (Hons) Photography also exhibited a reduced version of the work shown in printed format at Paragon House from Monday 23 to Friday 27 June, alongside MA Interior Environment Design.
Student Aleksandra Bigoszewska said, “Being included in the screening felt validating and meaningful, like a moment of recognition that the work I have been doing since graduation resonates. Thank you for giving me the foundation and encouragement to pursue this direction.”
UWL staff member James O’Rourke, previously a UWL student, commented, “It was a real privilege to have my work included as part of the UWL 10 Years exhibition! It was exciting to see my work presented on such an incredible screen!”
