Sir Andy Murray is used to returning fast serves on the court, but his latest challenge saw him fielding unpredictable questions from the British public. Ahead of the highly anticipated men’s final at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club, Walker’s Shortbread’s first-ever ‘Spectator Coach’ surprised fans with an exclusive, unscripted masterclass to tackle their real-world tennis dilemmas.
Building on his recently shared definitive rules for respectful cheering and quiet snacking, the five-time Queen’s champion opened the floor to fans, fielding spontaneous questions and tackling highly specific fan scenarios ahead of the wider grass-court season.
During the candid session, Murray addressed real-world spectator faux pas and shared his invaluable, off-the-cuff insights for anyone attending a match this season. His brother, Jamie Murray, who was on-site in his official role as Tournament Director of the Queen’s Club Championships, also joined the session to cheekily put his own questions to Andy.
Highlights from the interactive session included Murray reminding first-time fans of the golden rule when watching a match, “definitely don’t shout out during the points or between first and second serves – that’s a no-no.” When asked if heckling is ever acceptable, he clarified “something smart or clever about the player’s game… is OK, but not anything abusive towards the player.”
Taking the ‘Spectator Coach’ off the screen and into the stands, this surprise appearance, with Walker’s Shortbread, engaged fans at the heart of the British summer of tennis, combining playful education with the perfect courtside treat.
Speaking on his surprise appearance, Sir Andy Murray said: “After sharing my top tips earlier this month, it was brilliant to drop in on the fans at Queen’s and hear what they actually wanted to know. They threw some great, highly specific questions at me about how to handle different situations in the stands!
“The crowd’s energy is a huge part of the British grass-court season, and hopefully, answering these real-life dilemmas will help fans across the country be the best spectators they can be. And, of course, it was another chance to remind everyone about the importance of a quiet snack like Walker’s Shortbread.”
