SPECSAVERS HAYES ophthalmic director, Irinder Khakha’s dedication to his profession has been recognised through the launch of new Specsavers awards for clinical and customer care.
In its first year in the UK, ‘The Doug and Dame Mary Perkins Awards’ recognise and celebrates colleagues’ professionalism and passion in the areas of clinical and customer care across the UK and Ireland. Those nominated individuals or store teams, from all areas of the Specsavers business, including optical, audiology and domiciliary are acknowledged for their respective efforts and dedication to their profession.
Irinder, who in addition to his work in store, also supports glaucoma and medical retina clinics at The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said he was thrilled to receive the award.
‘It truly is an honour. My passion is optics and providing the best possible clinical care to my customers and the local community. I am also very focussed on keeping up to date with my professional qualifications, which is really important to me.
It is thanks to Specsavers and being a director that I have the support to complete the qualifications I need to work at the top of my game.’
The award presentation ceremony took place on 16th October 2022, at the Professional Advancement Conference (PAC) held in Birmingham. The winners will also visit Specsavers Head Office in Guernsey, where the Specsavers story began, and where Doug and Dame Mary continue to work within the business. In addition each Award winner received a medal and £1,000 in prize money.
Doug Perkins, Specsavers Co-Founder said: ‘These two new awards are very special. They celebrate and recognise colleagues’ professionalism, and passion, in the areas of clinical and customer care. The winners are outstanding, and all go above and beyond to deliver exceptional clinical customer care.’
Currently incumbent Chair of the Hillingdon Local Optical Committee (LOC), Irinder has a passion for on-going development and furthering his knowledge within optometry.
With an MSc in clinical optometry, a diploma in independent prescribing, a higher certificate in glaucoma, professional certificate in medical retina and pending diploma in glaucoma, Irinder is keen to continue enhancing his expertise in his chosen profession. In addition, Irinder writes, facilitates and presents at peer-to-peer workshops, and national conferences.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Irinder and the Specsavers Hayes team provided the local community with the Covid-19 Urgent Eye care Service (CUES), which helped ease the demands made on the NHS at that time, and was part of the immediate and recovery phase for the coronavirus pandemic. This was a vitally important role involving, identifying and managing eye disease – with the outcome for patients being very good.
