The Road to Wrestlemania starts from the Royal Rumble, one of the most exciting pay-per-views in the WWE’s calendar year. The event is always a spectacle for fans since it is packed with chaos, surprise returns, shocking eliminations, new records, and occasional unexpected winners. The first-ever Royal Rumble match was held in 1988, throughout its subsequent editions. Below are some key stats and facts behind the Royal Rumble.
WWE Hall of Famer “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan emerged victorious in the first-ever Royal Rumble match held in 1988. The event, which Duggan calls “the Wild West out there“, was organised by the then World Wrestling Federation at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Canada. Duggan eliminated The One Man Gang to win the event, including notable participants like Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Hillbilly Jim, and the late Ultimate Warrior. In 2018, Asuka won the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble, organized at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels, has entered the Royal Rumble event in four different decades. He first competed in 1989 and back-to-back in 1995. He was also the first to win the Royal Rumble as the number one entrant. Michaels participated in many Royal Rumbles in the 2000s, appearing in his last one in 2010.
Nine men and one woman have won the Royal Rumble event on their first try. Asuka won the inaugural women’s event, taking the female crown. For the men, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Ric Flair, Yokozuna, Bret Hart and Lex Luger, Mr. McMahon, Lesnar, Benoit, Alberto Del Rio, and Shinsuke Nakamura are the fortunate ones who have achieved this impressive feat.
Lord Tensai, A-Train, and Prince Albert are some of the numerous gimmicks Matt Bloom has entered the Royal Rumble events over the years. However, his results in all five appearances have been the same; he has never eliminated anyone.
