Tech donation bank opens to help save tonnes of electrical waste at Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has partnered with Tech Takeback – a not-for-profit organisation providing secure, sustainable solutions for unwanted electricals – to open the first technology donation bank in Canary Wharf. The pop up will allow people to donate their unwanted laptops, mobile phones and tablets, which may be gathering dust, to be given a second life within the local community of Tower Hamlets.

The pop up will be located in Jubilee Place mall and will be open to the public for three days from Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th February. All tech donated will be data-erased before being distributed to local community partners who may suffer from digital exclusion in the Tower Hamlets areas to ensure usable tech isn’t thrown away. Currently over 60%[1] of waste electrical and electronic equipment disposed of at household waste recycling centres could be suitable for reuse after minor repairs, and donating to Tech Takeback ensures electricals are put to good use where possible.

The aim of the initiative is to help residents, workers and visitors declutter this new year, while doing their bit to save the planet by extending the life of refurbished items which would otherwise end up in landfill. Most importantly, the scheme helps to rehome old and unused technology by giving it to those who wouldn’t usually have access to these types of products. It is the latest example of CWG’s commitment to creating positive change through social purpose.

To encourage people to donate their old tech to a good cause, retailers including Badiani and Pure will be giving away vouchers to donators, available daily on a first come first served basis. After donating old tech as a good deed for the day, there are plenty of activities to enjoy across the Wharf. From adults only fairground Fairgame to a competitive game of padel at the new Padium centre, or exploring Canary Wharf’s 16.5 acres of parks and green spaces, plus with over 70 restaurants, bars and cafes to enjoy, there’s plenty to enjoy whilst exploring the Wharf.

The pop up tech donation back will be open from Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th February and open to the public from 10am-6pm daily.
