Tesco is getting ready to welcome customers to the opening of a new Tesco Express store in Peckham.

The Peckham Tesco Express, which opens its doors on Monday 24th May, will be an exciting new addition for the community.

In addition to providing extra jobs in the town, the new store, located on Rye Lane, Peckham, will further contribute to the Tesco’s Community Grants and food bank initiatives across Peckham and the surrounding area.

Supporting the local community is hugely important to Tesco and its colleagues and over the last five years, the supermarket’s customers in Camberwell and Peckham have helped to raise £71,621 for 36 groups and good causes through its Bags of Help blue token voting scheme – now known as Tesco Community Grants.

Since its launch in 2015, The Tesco Community Food Connection Scheme has also donated 38,232 meals to local charities in the area. The scheme has ensured no surplus food goes to waste from Tesco stores and distribution centres.

Store Manager Vishal Gungadin said: “We are extremely excited to be opening our Peckham Express store and helping to serve the local community at this difficult time. The safety of our customers and colleagues is our number one priority and we have been working hard to introduce the social distancing measures designed to keep everyone safe, whilst still offering the local community brilliant service, a broad range of products including fresh food and food to go, and we look forward to welcoming our first customers.

“We have new colleagues joining the team at the store who are from the local area and that local knowledge and experience will be so important as we look to build connections and play our part in the community.”

Through distribution partners, FareShare and the Trussell Trust, local groups across the country are dedicated to ensuring that the most vulnerable within our communities are supplied with essentials even if they cannot leave home.

The Community Food Connection scheme is run in partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare. Each month more than a million meals of food are donated.
