The Royal Borough of Greenwich is joining workplaces across the country to celebrate Race Equality Week.

The annual UK-wide movement will take place from 6 to 12 February. It aims to unite organisations and individuals to address the barriers to race equality in the workplace.

As well as running a series of internal workshops and activities for staff to get involved with, the Council will be encouraging more local organisations to join the 349 that have already signed our Equality and Equity charter. The charter represents a commitment to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across the borough. Recent signatories include The Big Red Bus Club, The Under 5s Project and Shooters Hill Sixth Form College.

The recipients of all 67 of our Voluntary and Community sector grants from 2023 to 2027 have also pledged to sign the charter.

Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities said: “The theme for this year’s Race Equality Week is ‘It’s Everyone’s Business.’ No matter your heritage or ethnicity, tackling race inequality is your business.

“We must all play a part in challenging it and it’s only by working together that we can move towards true equality and equity within the workplace and elsewhere. Throughout this week, staff within the council will be taking part in workshops and activities to learn more about ways in which we can challenge race inequality in our day to day lives.

“If, like us, your organisation is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, I encourage you to sign our Equality and Equity charter this Race Equality Week.”

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is committed to ensuring people will not face discrimination in our borough. In order to work towards this mission, outlined in the Council’s new corporate plan, Our Greenwich, reducing inequality in life chances including employment for people with protected characteristics is key.

As well as supporting Race Equality Week, the Council’s Black History 365 programme of events continues, which recognises Black history all year round, continues throughout February.
