The Royal Borough of Greenwich is proud to be home to the second largest Armed Forces community in London. This remembrance weekend, the borough will be hosting a roster of events to show its support for serving troops, veterans, cadets, and service families.
Cllr Adel Khaireh Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities said: “The military connection to our borough spans over 200 years and was here long before any of us. I hope we all use this remembrance weekend to attend one of the events in the borough, take part in a two-minute silence and learn about the Armed Forces community.”
The Council will resign the nationally recognised Armed Forces Covenant on Armistice Day, 11 November 2022 at Woolwich Town Hall. The ceremony will end with a two-minute silence at 11am along with the rest of the nation.
The Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. It is a voluntary statement of mutual support between civilians and its local Armed Forces. The promise includes the moral obligation by the government at a local level.
Throughout the weekend, wreath laying ceremonies will be held across the borough for residents to attend and pay their respects.
The Mayor, Cllr Leo Fletcher said: “Resigning the Armed Forces Covenant not only strengthens the already rich ties we have to the military but acts as a reminder of their honourable presence in our borough.
“Supporting the Covenant means that as a borough we continue to strive facilitation of services that help Armed Forces veterans and reservists to cadets, service families and the charities supporting serving, training and past troops.”

Wreathlaying ceremony with the Royal British Legion.
12pm | Plumstead Cemetery
Wreath laying ceremonies, with the Royal British Legion beginning at Plumstead Cemetery an ending at the Memorial in Woolwich New Cemetery.
10.45am | Maze Hill
Wreath laying ceremonies with the Royal British Legion beginning at Maze Hill. The ceremony will go onto St. Johns Church (SE3), Charlton Village and Cemetery Lane.
Sunday 13 November
10:45 | Eltham
Parade of veterans and youth organisations along Eltham Highstreet. The parade will end with a wreath laying ceremony at Eltham War Memorial (junction of Eltham Hill and Eltham High Street, SE9 1DH) and a two-minute silence at 11am.
The service will follow in St. John’s Church, Eltham.
