This afternoon, The Royal Opera brought the thrill of world-class live performance directly to the streets of Covent Garden with a surprise open-air rendition of Puccini’s iconic aria, Nessun Dorma, from his opera Turandot.

Appearing on the historic Davies Terrace overlooking Bow Street, acclaimed tenor SeokJong Baek joined forces with the Royal Opera Chorus to surprise hundreds of passersby, tourists, and sports fans.

The unannounced performance was staged to mark the official opening of this summer’s premier global football tournament, celebrating the profound and enduring relationship between opera, popular culture, and international sport.

The performers all wore a range of shirts from Classic Football Shirts, inspired by the 1990 tournament, for the one off performance.

Puccini’s masterwork became inextricably linked with football history during the 1990 international tournament in Italy, where Luciano Pavarotti’s definitive rendition captivated a worldwide audience. Its subsequent adoption as a historic broadcasting theme cemented the aria as a global anthem of triumph and shared cultural unity.

Alex Beard, Chief Executive, Royal Ballet and Opera:

“From the soaring crescendo of Nessun Dorma in Turandot – a piece forever entwined with the spirit of football – to the roar of the modern game, we’re reminded how music and football share the same power to move people. As we enter football’s biggest tournament, we wanted to carry a little of that emotion onto the streets of London – celebrating the passion, unity and anticipation that both opera and football inspire. We wish our teams every success.”
Today’s performances offered the public the opportunity to experience the scale and power of The Royal Opera outside the walls of the auditorium, filling the vibrant heart of London with one of the most emotional pieces of music ever written.
