This Year’s Summer Reading Challenge aims to get 38,000 Newham kids reading

Newham Council urges children and families to maintain their good work in the 2021
Summer Reading Challenge that aims to get tens of thousands of Newham children
reading over the holidays.

While the challenge officially launched this week, children in Newham have already
started their reading challenge at the end of the summer term. But now they are
being asked #keep up the challenge over the holidays.

This year, children can throw themselves into the adventures of the Wild World
Heroes, an exciting and engaging series set in the fantasy world of Wildeville that
encourages young readers to care for the environment and make our world a better
place for everyone.

Families can take part in the Summer Reading Challenge by visiting any Newham
library to borrow and read at least six books of their choice over the holidays. From
comics to adventure fiction, or picture books and poetry, the Challenge aims to
nurture imagination and promote a love of reading.

Children who keep up the challenge can collect prizes and stickers for their reading,
and build towards a certificate award at school in September.

Rokhsana Fiaz, Mayor of Newham said:
“It’s really exciting to that over 38,000 have signed up to take part in the 2021
Summer Reading Challenge. After this incredibly tough year, I know that the children
who take up the Challenge will have a great time immersing themselves in such
positive and inspirational stories.”

“Building a love of reading in young children is such a crucial way to
promote learning and attainment. This summer is the perfect opportunity to explore
the wide range of books, activities, and learning events available at our community
libraries, like the newly refurbished North Woolwich library. Please do get involved
and good luck in the challenge!”

All Newham primary school children have been automatically signed up to take part,
and should have received a new blue library card for use at any Newham library.
Post pictures of your children receiving their finisher’s medal with the
#KeepUptheChallenge @newhamlibraries for the chance to win a prize.

Additionally, libraries in Newham will host a series of exciting events across the
summer holidays to support the Challenge such as Zoolab sessions to explore the
world of exotic animals, interactive poetry, planting sessions, and events focused on
having fun with science. All events are bookable on Eventbrite
