Year 6 pupils at Hermitage Primary School in Tower Hamlets, part of LETTA multi-academy trust, took to the boards to perform their end-of-primary production at the Half MoonTheatre in Limehouse.
The production, Tales of the Thames, was an original production written by one of LETTA’s trainee teachers and beautifully embellished with the creative ideas of the children themselves.
The play was inspired by Hermitage’s rich local heritage and brought history to life with vivid references to the historic docks, the iconic River Thames and bustling local taverns.
Through a captivating mix of acting, singing and energetic dance routines, the children poured their hearts into every scene.
There were two show-stopping performances: a matinee and an early evening performance, with proud parents and families, current and former Hermitage staff attending.
It was a true community celebration, with an audience that included proud parents and families, current and former Hermitage staff, as well as a LETTA trainee teacher who had previously taught the cohort.
The grand finale followed a fantastic dress rehearsal the day prior, where Year 6 performed the entire show to an enchanted audience of Year 1s through to Year 5s.
By staging the performance in a professional theatre, Hermitage Primary gave the children the chance to perform on a professional stage and experience the excitement of a real theatre environment.
The school’s decision to stage the production at the Half Moon Theatre reflects its commitment to providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom and making full use of the amenities and opportunities that are on its doorstep on account of its central London location.
Max Lawson, headteacher of Hermitage Primary School, said: “We were absolutely delighted that our Year 6 pupils had the opportunity to perform at the Half Moon Theatre this year.
“It was an unforgettable and confidence-building experience for them as they prepare to move on to secondary school and a wonderful way to celebrate everything they have achieved during their time at Hermitage.
“We are incredibly proud of the commitment and enthusiasm the children have shown throughout rehearsals and we would also like to thank staff at the Half Moon Theatre for all their help and support in making this happen.”
