UWL expert highlights innovation in heritage conservation at Ealing Civic Society lecture

Dr Efcharis (Haroula) Balodimou, Senior Lecturer in the Built Environment and Course Leader in Architectural Design Technology at the University of West London (UWL), recently delivered a lecture to members of the Ealing Civic Society, highlighting the University’s expertise in heritage conservation, sustainability and architectural innovation.

The lecture, titled ‘Innovation in Heritage Conservation: Emerging Practices and Future Directions’, was held at Open Ealing in Dickens Yard and attracted members of the local community who engaged actively throughout the evening.

Exploring the future of heritage conservation

Drawing on her extensive experience as both an architect and academic, Dr Balodimou explored the importance of conserving historic buildings, not only for their architectural value but also for their role in protecting cultural identity and collective memory.

The presentation examined how innovative technologies are reshaping conservation practice. Dr Balodimou highlighted the use of laser scanning, thermal imaging, digital surveying, artificial intelligence and 3D printing, demonstrating how these tools can transform conservation practice while complementing traditional restoration skills.

Contemporary examples and initiatives

Using the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris as a contemporary example, Dr Balodimou demonstrated how innovation and craftsmanship can work together to protect historic buildings for future generations.

As part of the event, Dr Balodimou also highlighted the School of Computing and Engineering’s Women in STEM (WInSTEM) initiative, showcasing UWL’s commitment to promoting diversity within STEM disciplines and encouraging greater participation by women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

While digital technologies and artificial intelligence are transforming the way we preserve historic buildings, they complement rather than replace the expertise of architects and conservation professionals. Protecting our built heritage requires both innovation and an appreciation of the cultural significance these places hold.”

Driving research into heritage preservation

Alongside her public engagement activities, Dr Balodimou is an active member of UWL’s Architecture, Construction and Urban Study Research Group and collaborates with the Faringdon Research Centre for Non-Destructive Testing and Remote Sensing.

Her research focuses on the application of non-destructive testing, remote sensing and digital technologies to heritage conservation and the monitoring of historic structures, helping to develop innovative approaches for preserving culturally significant sites.
